House Democrats filed an impeachment brief with the Senate on Feb. 2, making their case for the Senate to convict former President Trump of inciting the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6. The brief, signed by the nine impeachment managers, argues that Trump bears “unmistakable” responsibility for the violence at the Capitol and that he should be barred from holding further federal office. It calls Trump’s actions a “betrayal of historic proportions.”

“A President who violently attacks the democratic process has no right to participate in it. Only after President Trump is held to account for his actions can the Nation move forward with unity of purpose and commitment to the Constitution,” the brief states. “And only then will future Presidents know that Congress stands vigilant in its defense of our democracy.”
