Encryption Legislation: Critics Blinded by Outrage are Blinded to the Lessons

As readers are well aware, Senators Richard Burr and Dianne Feinstein released draft legislation on encryption, the “Compliance with Court Orders Act” (CCOA), the other day. Judging by the apocalyptic tenor of responses to both the released discussion draft and to an earlier leaked version, it is reasonable to expect many in the technology industry and advocacy organizations to oppose this legislation the way they might oppose, say, the rule of Satan.

Draft Feinstein-Burr Encryption Bill is Here

The Hill has obtained a draft of Senators Dianne Feinstein and Richard Burr's much-discussed and long-awaited encryption bill, entitled the "Compliance with Court Orders Act of 2016." The bill is designed "to require the provision of data in an intelligible format to a government pursuant to a court order, and for other purposes." I'm sure many Lawfare contributors will have thoughts to share.
