Danner’s book is not a work of academic analysis or journalistic reportage but instead a synthetic account of America’s drift since 9/11 by someone who thinks the country has gone dreadfully wrong.
Many commentators noted last week that President Obama’s decision to keep 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through 2016 (with the hope of reducing that number to 5,500), combined with the rising number of troops in and around Iraq to fight ISIS, marks a defeat for the Preside
