Over the course of two days leading up to the Senate’s vote to remove or acquit President Donald J. Trump, senators from both sides of the aisle had the opportunity to explain the reasoning behind their votes to their colleagues and the American people. Senators made individual speeches on the Senate floor, and their statements are not a formal part of the impeachment proceedings. Many from both sides decried partisanship and political tribalism, some condemned members of their own party, and all took some issue with parts of the impeachment process.
Most people do not have the time to listen to two days’ worth of Senate speeches. So Lawfare and Goat Rodeo compiled a one hour and 32 minute sampling of the speeches, to ensure you have a fair representation of the senators’ rationales for and against removing President Trump.
This episode includes the speeches of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), as well as Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Lisa Murkowski, (R-Alaska), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine).
