The Justice Department filed a civil enforcement action in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on May 17, seeking to compel casino mogul and Republican megadonor Steve Wynn to register as an agent of the Chinese government. The suit alleges that Wynn used his relationship with the Trump administration to advance China’s interests in 2017. According to the complaint, Wynn contacted Trump and members of his administration to relay a request from a Chinese official that the U.S. government remove a Chinese national who was seeking asylum in the United States. The department alleges that Wynn was acting to protect his business interests in Macau.
The complaint is the first affirmative civil lawsuit under the Foreign Agents Registration Act in more than 30 years, according to the Justice Department.
