On June 14, the U.S. Justice Department Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released its audit of the U.S. Marshals Service’s (USMS) management of seized cryptocurrency from fiscal year (FY) 2017 through FY 2021.
The audit found multiple inadequacies in the USMS’s management and tracking of seized cryptocurrency. The OIG warned that deficiencies in the USMS's current operating procedures risk “an inaccurate accounting of cryptocurrency in USMS custody and the potential for a loss of assets.”
