On May 10, the Justice Department unsealed an indictment for Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), for “devising and executing” a fraudulent scheme to raise money for his congressional campaign in September and October of 2022. The document alleges that Santos asked his donors to contribute to a private company, rather than to his campaign. Santos then purportedly spent thousands of dollars of campaign contributions on “personal expenses, including luxury designer clothing and credit card payments.”

According to the indictment, signed by the U.S. Attorney and Chief of the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, Santos may have violated the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, which limits campaign contributions and mandates the public disclosure of fundraising activities. Santos was indicted by the Justice Department’s U.S. Eastern District of New York Criminal Division, which has jurisdiction over NY-3, the district that he currently represents.
