The Justice Department charged six Russian military officers for computer hacking in connection to a series of global hacking efforts that sought to support Russian government.

The six defendants were identified as residents and nationals of the Russian Federation, and officers in Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). Specifically, the GRU Hackers are alleged to have been engaged in cyber intrusions and attacks aimed at supporting Russia’s efforts in Ukraine and Georgia; interfering in 2017 elections in France; responding to efforts to hold Russia accountable for its use of a weapons-grade nerve agent, Novichok, on foreign soil; and responding to accusations of Russian doping surrounding the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.
