On Oct. 21, the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol formally issued a subpoena to former President Donald Trump. The subpoena seeks documents and testimony from Trump about the “multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and to obstruct the peaceful transition of power” that Trump himself “personally orchestrated and oversaw,” according to the committee.

In the subpoena letter, committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) wrote that they recognize that subpoenaing a former president is a “significant and historic action,” but provided examples of former presidents that have also testified before Congress after they had left office.

The select committee publicly voted to subpoena Trump last week and formally issued the subpoena to the former president this afternoon.

According to the subpoena, Trump is required to submit documents to the select committee for review by Nov. 4, and to appear for testimony on Nov. 14.
