FBI Director James Comey testified in front of the House Oversight and Governance Reform Committee for nearly five hours today. Under scathing and often incredulous questioning by House Republicans, Comey defended his public decision to recommend that no criminal charges be leveled against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server while she served as secretary of state. Though Comey repeated his stance from yesterday, he also added that Clinton was “negligent” in her handling of classified material and that her lawyers probably deleted classified material as they destroyed thousands of her emails.

Republican lawmakers sought to tease out blunt statements from Comey including an acknowledgement that Clinton’s sworn testimony in front of Congress diverged from the facts uncovered in the FBI investigation. Representative Jason Chaffetz, the Republican chairman of the committee, promised Comey that the Bureau would receive a “referral” from Congress to investigate her statements under oath.
