A few moments before midnight on Dec. 31, 1962, the lights were dimmed in the old gym at West Point during the new year’s ball for plebes (first-year students). In those years plebes were not permitted to go home for Christmas, and these few moments of discreet darkness enabled us, the Class of 1966, to kiss our dates while avoiding the strictly prohibited public display of affection.

In Defense of the 'Deep State' and a Free Press

It has come as a great surprise to learn that most of my 45 years in Washington were not spent in honorable public service but, rather, as part of the “Deep State,” an evil cabal whose mission is to resist many conservative ideas and undermine President Trump.

Those who conjured up the Deep State narrative have seen too many bad movies. Their contempt for career public servants is misinformed and dangerous.
