This afternoon, President Trump signed a long-awaited executive order on cybersecurity, titled “Strengthening the Cybersecurity of Federal Networks and Critical Infrastructure.” This post will walk through the three substantive sections of the order.
Section 1. Cybersecurity of Federal Networks
As Daphna Renan and David Pozen note, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s memorandum to Attorney General Sessions on Comey’s action last summer, which was the ostensible basis for firing FBI Director James Comey, circumvented the ongoing investigation into Comey’s actions by DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz.
FBI Director James Comey was abruptly fired yesterday by President Trump, the New York Times reports. Today the Times reports that Comey had requested significant additional resources for the Russia probe just days before the firing.
Following the abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey there is widespread speculation about whether the episode constitutes obstruction of justice.
