While you weren’t looking, Guantanamo has been closed—and turned into an art museum!
I am writing to the museum staff now for any information they might be willing to provide about this remarkable alternative vision of present reality. I’ll post whatever information they send my way. In the meantime, enjoy.
UPDATE: Rene Durruti, representing the Guantanamo Bay Museum, responds to my inquiry, writing:
The museum is the result of a collaboration between artists/theorists and is meant to act as both a critique of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility as well as assert the possibility of its closure. In this sense, it is a ‘real’ museum, although I cannot promise that there is a physical building in Guantanamo Bay. (It exists on Google Maps as well). We’ll be releasing a longer statement tomorrow morning once the project has been public for a full 24 hours, and I’ll be sure to send it your way.
Interestingly, the Google Maps location appears to be on the Cuban side of the border.
