CNN is reporting that Haji Mali Khan, the senior commander of the Afghan Haqqani insurgent group, was captured in a joint Afghan-NATO operation on Tuesday (the announcement of his capture was delayed until today because of difficulties confirming his identity). Khan is the uncle of Siraj and Badruddin Haqqani, the two brothers who run the insurgent group, which one U.S. commander described as “the most resilient enemy network out there” and which outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen called “a strategic arm of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Agency” in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee last week. As Bobby has noted, the Haqqani network is still not on the State Department’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, though Secretary of State Clinton stated on Wednesday that the State Department is in the “final formal review” stage of putting the Haqqani network on the list.
